Super Bowl betting: what does the history look like?
With Super Bowl betting being a staple of Vegas since the first game back in 1967, we’re lucky enough to have all the history. So we can judge all the way from the very start to last year’s rout of Kansas City by Tampa Bay.
Looking at the 55 Super Bowl betting results, we see that the favourite has actually covered 28 times, for a strike rate of 51%. So pretty much exactly what you’d expect over the long term.
It’s a bit of a different story in more recent events however. Favourites have only covered in 3 of the last 10 Super Bowls, and 6 of the last 20. So underdogs have hugely over-performed in more recent times.
The long-term results of the market also stand up when it comes to total, with a perfect 27-27 split of the 54 Super Bowls in the under / over total (there has been 55 Super Bowls, but there was no total market in the first game).
So what does this tell us?
Perhaps the obvious… Super Bowl major markets are very sharp and extremely hard to beat over the long-run… as you’d expect! This is one of the biggest betting markets on earth: the sum knowledge of millions of bettors and their money. In the long run, the market is exactly right!
And secondly… That we probably should be looking elsewhere to find some genuine value on the big game. The bookies offer hundreds of different markets and props.
