The Q22, run over 2200 metres at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day, is a relatively new race that’s been conceived by Racing Queensland. It’s one of the richest races of the Brisbane Winter Carnival, with $1.2 million in prizemoney. The forerunner to this race was the PJ O’Shea Stakes, also run over 2200 metres at weight-for-age.
Q22: Alfie’s preview
Speed It looks to be fast. Numerian, Polly Grey and Hopeful will look to lead. Heutor and Great House will settle back.
Runner-by-runner

3 Huetor [$3.30] is the one to beat. He put in a great run winning the Doomben Cup last start and is now fourth-up. If the track is fair again he’ll get every chance.
9 Maximal [$5.50] beat home Zaaki in the Doomben Cup so has some talent. He’s not without a chance, but will have to turn the tables on Heutor.
6 Great House [$12] ran a peak figure in the Doomben Cup and is in the right camp (Waller) for a grand final. He won sixth-up last prep and is a knockout chance.
1 The Chosen One [$12] will find it tough to turn around the Doomben Cup result, where he finished fifth.
4 Numerian [$13] beat Great House last start, but is now 35 days in between runs. That makes it tough.
15 Polly Grey [$17] doesn’t go as well on a dry surface, which really will impact her chances.
8 Le Don De Vie [$17] will have to produce a career best figure and a fair spike to win this, but in the right camp (Maher / Eustace) to do it. Can never write them off.
16 Coventina Bay [$26] finished almost four lengths back in the Doomben Cup. Hard to see her turning the tables.
2 Kolding [$26] put in an improved run last start. Back on a dry surface is a tick, but hard to see him winning.
5 Yonkers [$31] isn’t quite up to Group 1 class for mine.
7 Kukeracha [$41] won at listed level three starts ago. It’s a step up now to a WFA Group 1.
The rest don’t have the figures to win here in my opinion: 14 Esti Feny [$34], 11 Hopeful [$8], 12 Criaderas [$41], 10 Ballistic Boy [$41], 13 London Banker [$67]
Betting strategy
Best Bet Sharp N Smart [$3.30]
The obvious choice in this race and looks a good bet.
Best Roughie Great House [$12]
If you’re looking at something at odds, Great House could be a nice each-way play with Waller flying at the moment.
