There are some key differences between the pro punters and regular punters. So what are successful pro punters actually doing differently that makes them successful?

Here’s five things that you can be assured help to give a pro punter an edge on the rest. Be on the right side of these and you’ve stepped your game up to the next level.

#1 Knowledge

Pro punters understand the basics of the game better than regular punters.

So read up. Listen to podcasts from pro punters. Learn how to calculate overs. Invest time into finding the best price, because you know how important it is. Learn how to do basic form. Learn about bank management.

Knowledge is the difference between winning and losing.

#2 Individual versus long-term results

Regular punters are very fixed on individual results. To a regular punter, a winner or loser is a good or bad bet. Pros brush off individual results, because we know individual results are luck. We enjoy the winners like everyone else but know it’s the long-term that matters on the punt.

#3 Maths

Whether you’re a form punter (ie you watch the replays, races, matches) or a numbers punter (ie pure data), every pro has a basic understanding of the maths of punting – you must. So if your selections are based off what looked good last week, or who played well and nothing else, read up on the maths of punting… because you need that to make money.

#4 Pro punters move on

All punters hate 2nds, losers, bad runs, missed prices, bad luck and those “changed my mind” winners. But the pros have been there before. They know it happens and stay focused on their next good bet. The bad stuff in punting sucks, and the pros feel that too, but they know it will happen at some point (and there’s no reason that can’t be now), so they keep the ship steady.

#5 Confidence

Pros stick to their guns because they know based on knowledge, research and experience that their approach is the long-term route to success. Regular punters aren’t really sure what their approach is, and tend to flip and flop about when the winners aren’t coming, changing approach and hoping to hit gold. So put in the effort before your bet and do your research – which may take weeks, or months. That way, when the inevitable bad run hits, you have the confidence to stick to your guns rather than questioning what you’re doing and changing your approach.
