Really have to be against Alligator Blood here. Obviously at his best is the best horse in this field but resumes here from over 300 days off after having surgery for kissing spine. Right there is a fairly large negative. You can add to that the trainer change – no disrespect to Billy Healey but going from DVD to Billy Healey I don’t think can be seen as a move likely to positively impact performance. Generally Healey runners are a bit underdone first-up as well. If that’s not enough then I think there are question marks about Alligator Blood over 1200m – I’m of the opinion this isn’t a distance that suits him and he needs 1400m+. I’m also not a weights man but he does give every other runner 7kg here which is not an insignificant amount. I thought he may come up shorter but I’ve still got him marked significantly longer than the current quote. Having said all that Racecourse Road looks the one to beat here IMO. Was excellent last prep winning first and 2nd up before running 2nd to Baller in a strong Listed Race 3rd up. Maps really nicely here to lead loose, runs well first up and has a good record at the track having won 2 of his 3 starts here. Comes into this off of a really nice trial where won narrowly from Contemptuous with a big margin back to 3rd in the fastest 840m trial of the day including the fastest run home time. Is certainly not a better horse than AB (on previous form anyway) but under these conditions is a much better bet IMO and I’m happy to play.
