five diamonds

The Five Diamonds is another of Racing NSW’s new feature races for the spring carnival, and will be held for the first time in 2022. The race, exclusively for five-year-old horses, is to be run over 1800 metres at Rosehill Racecourse, with total prizemoney of $2 million.

Here’s expert punter Alfie on the 2022 edition…

Five Diamonds 2022: Alfie’s preview

Track: It’s currently a Good 4 and with little rain predicted, it should stay close to that for race time.

Speed: The pace is about average here. Ellsberg has a good draw and should lead. Sibaaq and Rustic Steel will push forward. Ayrton has the tough draw from out wide.

1 Ellsberg [$2.30] been great the last two starts, winning the Epsom then the Diamond Prelude. There’s nothing saying he can’t get to 1800 metres for the first time. A deserving favourite.

2 Laws Of Indices [$4.80] may be at his best on wet tracks… that’s the question mark over him. He’s good enough to win this if he can handle the firmer track.

4 Ayrton [$8] pulled up lame last time he started over 1800 metres. He’s undoubtedly a talent but may have to work hard early.

7 Uncle Bryn [$8.50] will be out the back, so will need some pattern in his favour. He’s a big chance if they can run on. He’ll run the distance.

9 Diamil [$9.50] will also be out the back but will need to improve to win this.

12 Rebel Rama [$18] has a couple of figures that could sneak a place in this.

10 Sibaaq [$19] will be in a good spot, but is just a bit short of the better ones in this race.

The others aren’t quite up to this and would seriously surprise with a win: 6 New Mandate [$31], 8 Longvillers [$31], 13 Ita [$51], 5 Milford [$81].

Betting strategy

Top pick Ellsberg
Value play
Uncle Bryn

Track pattern will be the key here, so my advice is to wait and see how things are going on the day and bet closer to race time once we have an idea of the patten. If the fence is okay and on-speed is the place to be, then Ellsberg is the bet. If they can run on however, Uncle Bryn may be worth a play at an each-way at the price.
