The Up And Coming Stakes is a $160,000 Group 3 race for three-year-old colts and geldings, run at Randwick Racecourse. Run over 1300 metres in late August, the race is considered a good jumping-off point for star three-year-olds in their spring campaign. Past winners include stars such as Fastnet Rock, Exceed and Excel, Testa Rossa and General Nediym.
Up And Coming Stakes 2022: Alfie’s preview
Track It’s currently a Soft 6, but with showers forecast it will depend on how much actually falls. I’m working in the soft range.
Speed Above average tempo. Kibou will need to jump well to get across and may get stuck wide, Lethal Thoughts will try and get forward and Ringmaster settles on the fence. Hell I Am goes forward but is another who has drawn an awkward gate.

11 Conqueror [$3.90] Where he settles in the run is the question mark. He has the talent but the current odds look too short for mine.
8 Kibou [$4.20] will want to go forward but has a tough draw. He’s the fit horse in the race and will appreciate the step up to 1300m. Has won on wet tracks.
2 Basquiat [$7] is first up. Finished fifth (beaten 1 length) in the Group 1 JJ Atkins. Will probably want longer.
6 Backrower [$8.40] is ne of the handful that’s not first-up, so should have fitness on his side. Should settle midfield.
3 Shalatin [$9.50] has had three trials leading into this so should be ready to go. I don’t think he’s quite as good as the top few.
4 Lethal Thoughts [$10] is coming off a trial win.
9 Hell I Am [$12] is another one who has to overcome a tough draw. He had great win last start in a BM72, so this is a class rise.
1 Williamsburg [$18] will prefer over longer later on this prep.
The others aren’t up to this for mine: 7 Golden Mile [$41], 5 Ringmaster [$14], 10 Voldemort [$71]
