betr

Betr is a new major Australian bookmaker that launched during the 2022 Spring Carnival. Although there have been many new online bookmakers in Australia in recent times, most have been smaller operators or existing on-course bookmakers taking their business online. This is very different. It’s a brand new betting operation, and is already anything but small!

How to sign up

Signing up for betr is very, very simple. It took us about two minutes… just head to this link and fill out this one simple form

Depositing into your betr account

From there you’ll want to deposit some money so you can get to work! Betr accepts the basics that everybody is used to: debit or credit card, or bank transfer.

Withdrawing from your account

When you want to take some cash out, betr offers a direct transfer to your bank account.

Some early users have reported some slow processing times for withdrawals. This is a result of the huge number of punters that have signed up for an account early on – the response to the launch has been far greater than expected. Thankfully, these issues are resolving themselves. Short-term technical issues aside, punters need not be worried about getting their money. They can rest assured that the business is legitimate and here for the long-run… betr’s backers are very big players, not fly-by-night operators. They certainly have the means to back up their vast promotion.

Do I need a promo code to sign up to betr?

No you don’t! Just hit this link to sign up, and you’re away.

App look and feel

The team obviously put a fair bit of thought into how things look when you first open the app, because all the important stuff is just a press away.

The first thing on the homepage is a large promotion piece that scrolls showing the latest offers and events. This will no doubt be used to display the most important information on upcoming events, so the real estate is warranted. From there it’s the usual shortcuts to big events and upcoming races:

Scroll down further and you’ll get the major upcoming race, plus upcoming tips. These tips come from the team at punters.com.au, and you can back them directly from this home screen:

Is the app fast?

We’ve given it a quick test and there’s no concerns with the app regarding speed – everything loaded quickly and bets were accepted within a couple of seconds.

Do betr have deposit matches and bonus bets?

Will you be able to get deposit matches or bonus bets for opening a new account and depositing funds? It’s hard to say as these offers are personalised to each punter. As we all know, the current laws around gambling advertising in Australia make it very difficult for bookmakers to advertise generous offers to new members. But like any bookie, you can be sure they will be active in the promotion space.

Does betr have a lot of betting promotions?

Again, the laws in Australia make it very hard for bookies to talk about that… but all you need to do is sign up to betr and log in, and their current promotions will be immediately visible.

Cox Plate offer: Anamoe delivers for the punters

Betr also offered a massive $21 about favourite Anamoe to win the Cox Plate… and the champ got the job done!

The promo is understood to have cost Betr in excess of $10 million.

“Our liability on Anamoe was more than five times what we’d budgeted,” Menz said told News Corp.

“It’s a great result for our customers so early on. While we were ambitious and keen to hit the ground running, we’re genuinely excited that the punters have landed an early blow.”

Melbourne Cup offer

Betr‘s signature offer on opening was their amazing Melbourne Cup promo, where they offered punters $101 odds about every runner in the Melbourne Cup! There was a max bet of $10, but still… the chance to win $1000 on any Melbourne Cup runner was an incredible opportunity and one that was taken up by, reportedly, hundreds of thousands of Australians.

The offer was open for a few weeks before betr slowly began to turn some horses off the promotion, given the astronomical payout figures they were reportedly facing on some horses. The worst outcome for betr was certainly the favourite, Deauville Legend, and there would have been some nervous traders in the betr office when he loomed up at the final turn of the great race! Gold Trip was the eventual winner, which still cost betr dearly, but it wasn’t the “lights out” result that the favourite was!

When does betr open for business?

Who is behind betr?

The consortium behind the operation includes:

  • Betting industry executive Matthew Tripp – the former owner of Sportsbet (which was sold to Paddy Power in 2010) and BetEasy (which was sold to The Stars Group in 2019)
  • Former BetEasy CEO Andrew Menz
  • News Corp, Australia’s major print publisher and online news outlet. NewsCorp owns several of Australia’s major news mastheads, such as the Herald Sun and the Daily Telegraph. NewsCorp also broadcasters Foxtel and Kayo Sports.
  • BetMakers, the wagering technology group behind many Australian online betting operators
  • Tekkorp, a US-based digital gaming consulting and investment firm

So it’s a lineup with a lot of experience in betting, and also a vast reach online and in broadcasting. This should give the new business a strong chance of competing with some of Australia’s established bookmakers.

What is the future?

Betr is keen to grow quickly.

“We make no secret that our ambition is to grow market share rapidly in what’s an extremely competitive market,” said Menz.

“And we’ll achieve that by putting the customer at the forefront of everything we do with the offering of compelling products and competitive odds.

“The brand we are building is one that stands for the punter. Racing is an industry but at heart it’s a sport and we want to celebrate the broader racing community and the great stories it generates.

“Your product, promotions and brand are critical.

“I’m hugely excited about our racing products and love the way we’ve been able to integrate content and tips and bring the punter along on the journey.

“Our sports offering is probably six months away from being where we want it but being in the heart of the racing season it has been our prime focus to get that right ahead of going to market.”

Betr and the Western Australian TAB license

Betr also looked to have won the auction for the last state-owned TAB in Australia, WA TAB, until last-minute issues saw the deal fall through.

John Stensholt of The Australian reports that Betr withdrew its bid for the WA wagering license after a dispute with the West Australian government regarding the use of its brand in the state, where the TAB brand is currently used by the state-owned business.
