The Shiners Children’s Open sees the players head to Las Vegas for a regular feature on the PGA schedule. This year’s renewal might not be the strongest but there are still several familiar names in the market.

Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
This event started out in 1983 but has undergone a number of name changes over the years (Las Vegas Invitational, Michelin Championship, Frys.com Open and a previous longer title, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open). It also started out as a 5-round, 90-hole event before this was reduced to the conventional 4-rounds in 2004. What has been constant is the location in and around Vegas, and since 1990 its place in the schedule – late October to early November. Not a flagship event of the PGA by any means, but early in the 2020/21 season it’s bound to produce plenty of competition for ranking points and prize-money.

The Course
TPC Summerlin is a par 71 course laid out over 7,235 yards. Built to the West of Las Vegas in the upmarket community of Summerlin, the course was designed by Bobby Weed and first opened in 1991. Slightly elevated (at 2,700 feet) but not enough to make a real difference in terms of altitude. On what is a resort course, with generous fairways and far from penal rough, scoring should be good this week with previous winning scores regularly better than 20-under-par.
72-Hole Record 260: Webb Simpson (2014) & Ryan Moore (2013)
18-Hole Record 60: JJ Henry (2013)
The Weather
You’ll struggle to see any rain in the desert with a daily precipitation forecast of 0%-0%-0%-0% over the course of the tournament. Temperatures will be in the low 80s, with some light cloud cover on Sunday. Wind speeds will be minimal, reaching a maximum of 4-6mph during the event.

Tom Kim (currently $22 with TopSport)
Joohyung Kim – aka “Tom” Kim is named after Thomas the Tank Engine (true fact!). The 20-year-old is already something of a phenomenon. Aged just 20 he’s a 6-time winner in the Far East, and has already won on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship. Notable other high finishes, including the Majors, mark him down as a future star – if he isn’t already. There’s a healthy cross-over of form between the North Carolina tournament and this one, and Kim’s 61 en route to the title is a perfect illustration of how well he could go this week at Summerlin. A very interesting bet for me at $22.
Si Woo Kim (currently $41 with TopSport)
The second Kim of the week, this time it’s Si Woo Kim. Another South Korean, our third of the week, the former Players Championship winner looks a decent bet this week. Again, drawing from strong form lines from Greensboro, Kim has a best finish in Nevada of 8th in 2020. His form during this year has been a little hit-and-miss, but a recent 5th on a return to the Far East will have done Kim no harm, likewise a win over Justin Thomas in the Presidents Cup singles. A quality ball-striker, and proven winner, if Kim can bring his A-Game to TPC Summerlin this week then odds of 40/1+ will look very generous indeed.
