Melbourne Cup 2022: Betting advice from Cameron O’Brien

Let’s pretend I haven’t had any bets at this stage, which is not the case as I backed Deauville Legend a while back at good odds. I wouldn’t be on Deauville Legend at the $3.80 right now. He’s clearly the horse to beat, but with the wet track I think he’ll probably drift.

The big overs for me right now is 100% Montefilia. Her Caulfield Cup run was fantastic and it was a great Melbourne Cup trial. This wet track we’re likely to get will be so up her alley and she has a good draw from barrier 11. I think David Payne has had this race as her target from the start of this prep and nothing else has mattered. She is ready to go, Jason Collett is a good rider, she’ll love the wide open spaces of Flemington and the wet track. I think she is a massive overlay right now and is a bet for sure.

For Hoo Ya Mal it’s a matter of taking him on trust. He can win. He was $21 yesterday so he’s been backed already. If you can find $16 he’s worth a little bet.

My betting advice right now would be to back Montefilia, look to have a little something on Hoo Ya Mal, and if Gold Trip got out then look to have a little something on him. I would also say that a little each-way bet on a 1 x 3 basis on Tralee Rose at $81 win and $21 place is not silly at all.

The exotics in a race like this could pay huge. If Deauville Legend doesn’t handle the wet track for example, then suddenly you don’t have the $3.80 favourite in the first four. My advice would be to take Montefilia as they key horse in a roving first four bet and then include Deauville Legend, Hoo Ya Mal, Gold Trip, Realm Of Flowers, Knights Order, Stockman and Tralee Rose. If Montefilia doesn’t run top four I’ll be extremely surprised.

Melbourne Cup 2022: Betting advice from Luke Murrell

I think if you’re not overly confident there are better races to be betting into, but the one thing I would suggest everybody play – even if it’s just for $20 or $50 – is to try and jag a first four. Because you know it’s going to pay $30,000 or $40,000 and if you can get a couple of percent of that, you’re going to get a good collect. So instead of having $20 on something at $8 or whatever, you may as well try and get a proper collect for no outlay.

I think it’s definitely one of those races where you should be playing those wide first fours and trifectas. There’s so much mug money there, it’s a good edge.

As far as who I have on top – reluctantly it’s Hoo Ya Mal first, Gold Trip second and then one of your roughies like Interpretation or even Arapaho for third. It’s a typical year where there’s four or five winning chances, another five or six that’ll run third to seventh, and the rest are no hopers as per usual. I think there’s more money to be made in the exotics this year for sure.

Melbourne Cup 2022: Betting advice from Trevor Lawson

I think it’s a fairly even race but there are plenty of horses here that are overlays. Having the overseas horses take up so much of the market means you have to use Timeform and other third-party ratings to help try and line them up. The days of being keen and really betting up in the race have passed us by.

There are plenty of roughies here that are overlays and I don’t mind betting that way as you’re not outlaying a lot of money…  horses I’ve marked 25s and we’re getting 40s. I’m happy to play the value, spec a few in the race and hope that Deauville Legend doesn’t win.

Hoo Ya Mal looks good overs, I’ve rated it $12. He ran well in the Epsom Derby at 150/1. Next start he ran third and Deauville Legend ran second nd in the same race, with a neck between them and the same weight difference as we have here.

Emissary is one I’d be really keen on if it was going to be a dry track. He was super in a fast-run Geelong Cup, but all his best runs are on the dry and that’s not the case here. I’ve marked him $18 so he’s still overs.
