The Everest 2022

It’s only a few years old, but there are few bigger events than Sydney’s flagship race, The Everest. Here are all the contenders for The Everest this year. They’ll be fighting it out over 1200 metres at Randwick on Saturday, October 15th. The prize is a share of the $15 million purse.

The Everest 2022: Expert preview with Alfie

The man behind Alpha Racing brings us his preview of the track, the speed and every runner in The Everest.

The track It’s currently a Heavy 9, with a few showers on Friday. I am playing in the Heavy range at the moment.

The speed Nature Strip, Eduardo, Shades of Rose and Joyful Fortune will battle it out for the lead. Overpass, Mazu, Lost and Running and Giga Kick sit in behind the speed.

#1 Nature Strip

$2.30 with TopSport (Slot: Chris Waller Racing)

Australia’s best sprinter and the reigning champ has barely put a foot wrong in 2022. Won the TJ Smith in Autumn, went to the UK in June and won at Royal Ascot, and came back to kick off this campaign with a comfortable in The Shorts.

Alfie says He had it his own way last start, but there’s a bit more pressure up front here. He’s certainly on top for me, but the price is a bit skinny at the moment.ย

$2.30

#3 Lost And Running

$6 with TopSport (Slot: TAB)

Ran fourth in The Everest last year, and third behind Nature Strip in The Shorts. Bounced back to win the Group 2 Premiere Stakes following this.

Alfie says He was outstanding last start. If he was ever going to turn the table on Nature Strip then today is the day.

$6

#2 Eduardo

$9 with TopSport (Slot: Yulong Investments)

Two-time Group 1 winner and longtime sparring partner of Nature Strip. Returned winning the Group 3 Concorde before running fourth in The Shorts.

Alfie says He was disappointing last start but is proven at this level, so is a chance at some nice odds.

$9

#11 Jacquinot

$10 with TopSport (Slot: Coolmore)

The boom three-year-old colt and winner of the Golden Rose. Two for two this prep, also winning the Group 3 McNeil Stakes at Caulfield.

Alfie says He’s up against the big boys here. I think he’s just a level below them.

$10

#4 Masked Crusader

$11 with TopSport (Slot: Max Whitby / Neil Werrett)

Hawkes Group 1-winning gelding. Ran third in the Premiere behind Mazu and Lost And Running.

Alfie says He’ll be back in the run and is a good place chance if they go too hard up front.

$11

#6 Private Eye

$13 with TopSport (Slot: Inglis)

Winner of the Epsom Handicap last year. Ran second in the Group 1 Stradbroke in the winter and has had one run this prep, winning the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes at Flemington.

Alfie says He was fantastic last start, but that was on a drier track.

$13

#5 Mazu

$15 with TopSport (Slot: The Star / Arrowfield Stud)

Won six straight races culminating in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 in May. Returned to run fifth in The Shorts and second behind Lost And Running in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes.

Alfie says Nature Strip will have to be slightly off for him to win. But if they overdo it up front he’s a chance.

$15

#12 Giga Kick

$21 with TopSport (Slot: James Harron Bloodstock)

Three-year-old gelding unbeaten in four career starts, the latest being the Group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington.

Alfie says This is a good challenge for him, but I don’t think he’s quite there yet.

$21

#8 Ingratiating

$34 with TopSport (Slot: Godolphin)

Godolphin four-year-old who has had two starts this prep for a win at Caulfield and second in the Group 2 Schillaci on Saturday.

Alfie says He was great last start but this is another challenge for him.

$34

#7 Overpass

$41 with TopSport (Slot: James Kennedy)

Bjorn Baker four-year-old, returned with second in The Shorts and a midfield finish in the Premiere.

Alfie says He’s a bit below these and has only run a figure once in the last 10 runs that is up to this. And that was on a dry track.

$41

#10 Shades Of Rose

$41 with TopSport (Slot: Bon Ho)

Four straight wins since July, culiminating in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes in September.

Alfie says She has taken all before her at the last four starts, but this is much tougher.

$41

#9 Joyful Fortune

$61 with TopSport (Slot: Aquis)

Multiple winner in Hong Kong. Won very comfortably in first Australian start over 1100 metres at Flemington.

Alfie says He’s an interesting runner but I can’t have him here.

$61

Alfie’s betting strategy & video preview

Top pick Nature strip

Alfie says It’s pretty much impossible not to have Nature Strip on top. It will be interesting to see what they do from the wide gate. There will be pressure up front. He’s a deserving favourite.

If Nature Strip is below his best it makes it a very open race.

The Everest 2022: Slot Holders

The Everest is a slot race: there are 12 slots available, which were sold to the holders (individuals or organisations) for $600,000 each per year. Slot Holders can basically do as they please with their slot, including on-selling it. It’s up to the slot holder to secure a horse to run in their slot. They may use a horse they own themselves, or enter into an arrangement with a horse’s owners which would see any prizemoney shared.

Here are the 12 Everest slot holders for 2022, and the horses that will be running for them.
