The three-year-olds fly down the Flemington straight on Derby Day in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes. The race’s official name is the Ascot Vale Stakes. Total prizemoney is $2 million.
Coolmore Stud Stakes 2022: Pro punter preview
Track It’s been given out as a Soft 7 early but you’d think it’ll be better than that because of the drainage. I’d say it’ll race as a Soft 5 or thereabouts, so in reasonable condition but with some give in it.
Speed The pace is pretty good here and it’ll be genuinely run. They’ll probably come up the middle, they usually do.

15 In Secret [$3.60] is a good-quality filly who is back in trip here after running second in the Spring Champion. She’ll be strong late. She’s drawn to sit just off the pace and is the horse to beat.
1 Jacquinot [$4.80] is going well and ran well in The Everest last start. The only slight negative is he’s looking to peak for a third time here which is a big ask. He’s still a very good chance however.
6 Buenos Noches [$7.50] has had two starts down the straight for a win and a narrow defeat. He steps to 1200 metres for the first time which looks an advantage. He’ll be strong late and looks a good chance at the odds.
14 Coolangatta [$7.50] is a quality filly who won the Moir at The Valley over 1000m. She was a late scratching last week. She’s won at 1200m as a two-year-old but had very slow closing sectionals. I’d prefer her at a shorter trip.
7 Grand Impact [$10] is an undefeated colt who ran well at Caulfield but would need to go to a new level here to be a really good winning chance.
8 Economics [$12] ran well first-up, then was a scratching at the barriers at Caulfield. So he’s now 35 days between runs which is not ideal.
2 Best Of Bordeaux [$17] is on the quick back-up from the Manikato and has run well at his last two starts. He’s drawn well and races on the pace. He’s a good chance at odds.

3 Sejardan [$20] is another on the quick back-up from The Valley. He ran well last week, getting home in the fastest sectionals of the day. He’s drawn out here and should be getting home late.
4 Lofty Strike [$21] ran okay first-up, but would need to improve a lot to be anything better than a rough chance here.
5 Nettuno [$21] is going okay but I would want long odds to back him.
16 Queen Of The Ball [$31] rated well at The Valley when suited by the bias, then had not much peace at Caulfield last start. Rough chance here.
I don’t think the rest are good enough to figure here: 17 C’est Magique [$41], 9 Meridius [$61],10 Doull [$61],13 Bews [$91], 11 Great Barrier Reef [$101], 12 Custodian [$101].

Top pick In Secret
Value pick Best Of Bordeaux
She’s definitely the horse to beat for mine and I don’t mind the price on offer. I wouldn’t want her to get any shorter but at this price I’m happy to be on.
Of those out wider, I think Best Of Bordeaux probably represents best value… he’ll be on the pace and giving himself a chance.
